Low Quality Of DALL-E 3 Images In ChatGPT, Better In Bing, And Even Better In NightCafe

I don't know if you've noticed, but the images generated by DALL-E 3 in paid ChatGPT often have very poor quality. The same images generated in free Bing are of much better quality, while the best results come from paid APIs, such as those available on NightCafe.

An image is worth a thousand words, so let me show you three images generated from the same prompt across three services. The artifacts and blurred lines weren’t caused by image compression, nor is the prompt itself the issue.

DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT

The problem with poor-quality images is especially noticeable in simple black lines on a white background. Look at the leaves on the saucer or the flower stems overlapping the outline of the cup. You can clearly see blurriness, distortions, and a lack of smooth, consistent lines.

Such an image doesn’t look good and can’t be used for commercial purposes, like in a book or for advertising. Converting it to a vector file for quick editing would also be problematic. It’s only suitable as a reference image or for personal use, such as creating coloring pages for kids. Even the white color isn’t truly white here.

The problem also arises in colorful, detailed images, although it’s less noticeable there. In these cases, poor line quality isn’t the only issue, as you might also see artifacts like small, overexposed white spots (which aren’t always immediately visible).

Considering that I’m paying for a ChatGPT subscription, the quality of DALL-E 3 images is disappointing.

DALL-E 3 in Bing Creator

The same prompt, but this time in the free Bing Creator. You can see the difference, right? The quality is incomparably better! The lines are smoother and more consistent, without those terrible blurry sections.

Of course, there are still issues, such as the jagged line of the cup’s upper rim or tiny dots (are they simulating smooth transitions between black and white?). However, these and other minor imperfections aren’t as glaring.

DALL-E 3 in NightCafe

This time, the DALL-E 3 image was generated using an independent service that utilizes the API, separate from Microsoft and OpenAI. This is a much more expensive solution, so it’s no surprise that the image quality is the best.

API

With a paid ChatGPT subscription, I still have to pay separately for the DALL-E 3 image generation service via API to enjoy good quality. This isn’t a great setup.
